Dan Marshall’s ‘American Idol’ fate revealed after Kenny Chesney cover
Dan Marshall, a 24-year-old former college football player, has never shied away from talking about his love of country music. He often covered 90s country artists throughout his career. american idol trip, so it was no surprise to see him take the stage to perform Kenny Chesney’s 1997 hit, “She’s Got It All.”
During rehearsals, Marshall had the chance to sit down with american idol alum Gabby Barrett, who returned to the show to offer advice to the top 14 contestants.
“I feel a little nervous, because you’re famous,” Marshall told her. “Gabby Barrett is a truly special performer and will have anyone shaking in their boots.”
“I don’t blame him for his nervousness, I just hope he doesn’t for the performance,” Barrett warned.
Together, Barrett and Marshall hatched a plan to encourage audience participation during her performance.
“I think Gabby could say this is all new to me. She’s so helpful and we work in a small place where maybe we can fit in the audience,” Marshall explained.
“They want to have that connection with you,” Barrett said of the live audience, before encouraging her to get the crowd involved. “So don’t be afraid to be like ‘come on!’ You know, like ‘let’s go!’ “
The “Pick Me Up” singer went on to encourage the Virginia Tech alum to enjoy his time on stage.
“It definitely helps you get out of your head when you’re entertaining people and trying to get them to come,” Barrett continued. “It lets you have fun and be comfortable, and sing like you.”
Playing acoustic guitar, Dan Marshall performed Kenny Chesney’s hit in front of the audience.
“And that’s how we do it, that’s how Dan,” exclaimed Lionel Richie. “What I love is ownership. In fact, you go on stage and you own Kenny’s song. Kenny Chesney, I love him, but that was your song. It was your song tonight. I’ll tell you this though, let me give you… You always say “oh my god I can’t believe this is happening” not only does it happen, but it happens to your best advantage because you speak like a star. You actually step into the boots and I love it.
“You know Dan, I think that was a great song choice,” Katy Perry added. “I think it was always so fun to sing at the bar. I think you really have to come up with a fun line and just like keeping it pro and remembering that you can’t… I feel like he would have Could have been a few more notes that could have had a little more, but you’re picking the right songs. I just want your focus to be a little… you know what I mean. Great song!”
Bryan, who could be seen singing from his seat throughout the performance, offered Marshall some constructive criticism.
“Yeah, the song…Your song choices over the last three rounds have been perfect and this was another perfect song choice for you,” added Luke Bryan. “You know, what I noticed, the front part of you looked kinda creepy. You sat in the middle and me and you were kind of…I was singing the song and I mean, I know this song in my sleep you got yourself in a bit of a mess with a few notes at the end so when you nail it and rock it and feel good just remember when you got it You know, you and Gabby talked about the crowd moment, take it and don’t back off in the corners, but good song choice and good work!”
At the end of the show, it was revealed that Dan Marshall did not get enough votes to make the Top 11. His Idol journey has ended.
